LinguaKata has no account, no server and no analytics. There is nothing to sign in to and nothing that reports back. The short version is that the app has no way to know who you are.
What is stored, and where
Two things, both only on your own device:
- Your settings — chosen avatar, theme, playback speed, which notation systems to show.
- Your recent and starred words — so the home screen can offer them again.
On a phone these live in a local database file inside the app. In a browser they live in localStorage for this site. Deleting the app, or clearing this site's data, removes them permanently. They are never uploaded, because there is nowhere to upload them to.
What is not collected
- No microphone. The app shows how a word is pronounced; it does not listen to you, record you or score you. It never asks for microphone permission.
- No account, email or name.
- No analytics, advertising or third-party trackers of any kind, in the app.
- No location, contacts, photos or camera.
The dictionary is on your device
All 126,036 pronunciations are bundled into the app when you install it, so looking a word up sends nothing anywhere. The app works with no network connection at all. Words that are not in the dictionary are worked out on your device from spelling rules, and shown to you labelled as an estimate.
Speech
Saying a word out loud is handed to your operating system's own text-to-speech, the same one your device uses to read anything aloud. On a phone that is normally on-device. In a browser it goes through the browser's speech feature, and some browsers send the text to their vendor's servers to generate the audio — that is the browser's behaviour, not ours, and the only thing passed to it is the single word you asked to hear. If that matters to you, the phone app is the better choice.
This website
This page and the app's web build are served by Google Firebase Hosting, which keeps standard server request logs including IP addresses, as any web host does. We do not add analytics or tracking scripts to them. The one theme preference this site remembers is kept in your browser.
Children
LinguaKata is suitable for all ages and collects no personal information from anybody, including children.
Changes
If a future version ever adds an account, syncing, or a cloud speech service, this page will be updated before that version ships and the app will say what changed.
